@KloeBrown2011 me too =D
I love this song!
[Sixth Verse]
When we’re home-coming
back through the German gates to home,
My brunette maiden
You’ll be my own!
My brunette maiden
You’ll be my own!
So Therefore wink…
[Fourth Verse]
Way of the cockroach!
A dissipated way of life!
I swear I’ll quit if
You’ll be my wife!
I swear I’ll quit if
You’ll be my wife!
So Therefore wink…
[Fifth Verse]
Yet we will whisper
So many lovely words, you know.
We’ll pick some roses.
Girl, I must go!
We’ll pick some roses.
Girl, I must go!
So Therefore wink…
[Second Verse]
Th’innkeeper loans us.
His debt is not his great concern.
Else in the morning
We won’t return!
Else in the morning
We won’t return!
So Therefore wink…
[Third Verse]
Th’innkeeper’s daughter
Wears her blue checkered dress so short.
Soon that blue dress will
Become our sport!
Soon that blue dress will
Become our sport!
So Therefore wink…
OK, I finished translating the whole song. My translation isn’t as accurate as wirbelw2′s because 1- I don’t know German that well, and 2- I tried to make it singable to the tune. So here it is:
[First Verse]
When we go marching
Out through the German gates to roam,
My brunette maiden
You must stay home!
My brunette maiden
You must stay home!
So therefore wink, my maiden wink, wink, wink,
(cuz) Undernerneath a little linden
Sits a tiny finch, finch, finch
Always chirping “Maiden, wink!”
@wirbelw2 Thanks for that translation. It’s a very motivation song to listen to and sometimes it rolls around in my head as I am walking the dog. My favorites are this march, Wen Die Soldaten, and Prussian Glory. All great marching tunes!
@MrMike3865 No, this is totally translatable. Here is a shot at the first verse and the chorus:
When we march, through the German gate, outward, pressing on,
Dark brown-haired maiden, you stay at home.
So wink, my maiden,
wink, wink, wink, wink,
Under a greening linden tree,
Sits a little finch, finch, finch, finch,
that just calls out: maiden wink!
All suggestions and improvements to the above translation are welcome!
Great marching song. But tell me why it is so hard to translate this song to English? Is the German language that hard to discern?
Why is it that every time a lovely German song comes up to enjoy and sing to, some f*****g idiot has to bring up Nazis etc.? We just want to enjoy the songs…! If some one had Russian/Soviet songs on video I’ll bet they wouldn’t bring up Stalin, the Communists and the ‘Events’ of that time and place… Its always the poor F******g Germans that get kicked in the teeth. I’m sorry about the language, but I get fed up with it. Leave the Germans alone and leave us to enjoy their wonderful songs!
@kristov29
I’m not quite sure about this one though. “Schwarzbraunes Maedel” (Black-Brown Girl) sounds political. After all, Black was the color of the SS, Brown of the NSDAP/SA…
I don’t care who you are, a song like that just makes you want to stomp your feet, have a beer and sing along (if you can). The vast majority of these German songs have absolutely nothing to do with Hitler or the Nazis and I wish that the extremist hate groups out there would stop using them as a vehicle to advance their agenda. Some of us just want to enjoy the music!
[2nd Verse]
(the) Innkeeper loans us.
His bill is not his main concern.
Else to another
Inn we will turn.
Else to another
Inn we will turn.
So therefore…
@pugliesej
Here’s an approximate translation of the first verse (singable):
When we go marching
Out of the German gates to roam,
My brunette maiden,
You must stay home.
My brunette maiden,
You must stay home.
So therefore wink, my maiden, wink, wink, wink,
(cuz) Underneath a little linden
Sits a tiny finch, finch, finch,
Always chirping “Mainden, wink!”.
Haven’t done the other verses yet.

I too like this song, am aware nothing to do with NAZI party, an old German folk song, unfortunately don’t speak German, are they english lyrics?
@hamstarschinken
Just beautiful, love this song.
Ich hoffe Unsere Soldaten in Afghanistan singen auch dieses Lied!!!
